AERONCA CHAMPION

The Aeronca Champion, commonly known as the “Champ,” is a high-wing, tandem-seat light aircraft introduced by the Aeronautical Corporation of America (Aeronca) in 1946. Designed as a competitor to the Piper J–3 Cub, the Champ offered several enhancements, including solo flight from the front seat, improved forward visibility, and oleo strut landing gear for better shock absorption.

Design and Development

The Champ’s airframe consists of a metal tube structure covered with fabric, providing a lightweight yet sturdy design. The initial model, the 7AC, was powered by a 65-horsepower Continental A65-8 engine, delivering a maximum speed of approximately 87 mph and a cruising speed around 70 mph. It features a service ceiling of 12,400 feet and a range of about 400 miles.

Production and Variants

Between 1946 and 1951, Aeronca produced over 7,000 units of the 7AC model. Subsequent variants included the 7BC with an 85-horsepower engine, the 7CC with a 90-horsepower engine, and the 7DC with an 85-horsepower engine. These models primarily differed in powerplant configurations and minor internal details.

In 1951, Champion Aircraft Corporation acquired the design and resumed production in 1955 with the 7EC model, featuring a 90-horsepower engine. Production continued with various refinements until 1964.

Flying Characteristics

The Champ is celebrated for its forgiving flight characteristics, making it a popular choice for flight training and recreational flying. Its design emphasizes simplicity and ease of handling, appealing to pilots who enjoy low-and-slow flying experiences. However, like all tailwheel aircraft, it requires attentive rudder coordination, especially during takeoff and landing phases.

Current Market and Legacy

As of recent years, vintage Aeronca Champs remain popular among aviation enthusiasts. Prices for well-maintained models typically range from $20,000 to $40,000, depending on condition and specific modifications. The Champ’s enduring legacy lies in its role as a foundational trainer and its contribution to general aviation’s post-World War II expansion.
